Brooklyn, NY (June 1, 2015) — puertos/cerrados is an audio installation by Marco Gomez that will premiere at Stream Gallery, Brooklyn on Thursday, June 18th, 2015. Employing original sound design and video work, this new work examines how burgeoning sexual awareness develops in urban environments where privacy is lacking. The artist recalls episodes of his adolescent memory, using them to construct an interactive environment. Utilizing a technique the artist calls ‘memory jogging’, Gomez acts to facilitate an internal conversation between his learned experience and those participating in the space.

‘Memory jogging’ is a concept the artist developed with his performance and DJ alter-ego, False Witness. Derived from current technology used for DJing, such as the Pioneer CDJ™, ’jogging’ is the act of spinning a jog wheel to mechanically manipulate sound playback.

The gallery environment is constructed to represent a bedroom that the artist grew up in. In this space, three distinct original audio pieces play concurrently on loop, strategically placed to represent the sonic elements of his personal recollections. Video footage collected from the artist’s home plays on loop, acting as a secondary medium. Gomez asks participants to explore the room and come to terms with their own moments of self-awareness.

puertos/cerrados will run at Stream Gallery in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York from June 18th until June 28th, 2015. The opening reception will take place at the gallery on June 18th from 6PM to 10PM. For more information, please contact the gallery and artist using the information below.
